Hello Woods Road!
Welcome to WordPress.com. This is your first post. Edit or delete it and start blogging!
Hi Woods Road family. I have opened this blog so that there is greater communication between the Woods Road Elementary School and the community. This is an opportunity for students and parents to communicate in a positive way with each other and with the school. This is not a forum to list negative issues or speak of anyone in a negative way. Issues of a personal nature or educational nature must still be done in a professional manner. Speak with the teacher first. If you are not satisfied, then contact me. You can reach me at sbgolub@nbsd.org as always.
This blog is an experiment and a greater use of the technology available to us in the 21st century. Anything inappropriate will be removed. Use this blog carefully and wisely. I am hopeful that it will afford us greater opportunities to do what is best for children, which is first and foremost for this school.
Sincerely,
Your principal, Mr. Golub

I’d like to compliment Mrs. Christian for the fine job she is doing in the art room and thank her for taking the time to set up the Virtual Art Gallery. It is wonderful to see the ccreative talents of the Woods Road students! All the work they have done already this year is quite impressive. Welcome to Woods Road School!

Being a full time working mother, I absolutley love the idea of being able to jump online and check out what’s been going on at my child’s school. I love the pictures that have been displayed from school trips and art classes. It makes me feel a bit more a part of the activities that take place when I am unable to attend in person due to working. Thank you so much!!!
October 17, 2006 at 8:21 am
This is SO cool! I think the Pay It Forward Idea is great! I think it’s great because it feels REALLY good helping people! Me and my friend Joanna were helping kids two from Kindergarden kids take thier Lunch Crate down to the cafeteiria! It felt really good. Both of us were happy.

This is a message to Jamie: I too am a full-time working mom and I agree with you that it’s nice to be able to see what is going on in school via this site. It would be nice to be able to meet some of the other moms who work full time. I sometimes feel guilty about working, not that I have a choice in the matter. But it would be nice to meet other mothers who may be dealing with these same issues. I hope Mr. Golub doesn’t mind this post!
October 24, 2006 at 10:58 am
I don’t mind the last comment at all. That is what this Blog is about – opening communication with everyone our WR community. Keep it up. Thanks
October 25, 2006 at 11:03 pm
Hi everyone! Thank you Anna and Jamie for the complement about the art work. Having 300 kids art projects to care for is quite an ordeal but knowing that parents and teachers appreciate seeing what their kids are up to in art, makes it all worth while. I can’t promise to put up all the work all the time but I will try my best to keep it current and on going asmuch as I can. We have so many exciting things coming up in art! I can’t wait to share it all with you.
I also want to thank Mr. Golub and the teachers and staff I have been working with over the last few weeks. I feel so welcome! Everyone has been so kind and helpful. You have all made me feel right at home!
If any of you want to make suggestions for art projects you would like to see, or if you need help with any art projects I would love to hear from you and help where I can. In general Friday afternoon I have 3 free periods in a row to catch up with my own work and help anyone who might need it. I have a ton of work just itching to be hung. If you have some space you want art work I can give you a pile of it to hang where you need it. Thanks again! Laura

I’d would like to send a very big “Thank You” to everyone who sent in canned dog food and evaporated milk for the shelter. The students helped the North Babylon library collect food to be donated to the Town of Babylon Shelter. The librarians were vey appreciative and proud of the students. Joanne Anderson, who has a column in The Beacon. arranged the food drive through the library. We received a call from Mrs. Anderson thanking us
for our help. Donating a can of food may not seem like much, but the group effort of the Woods Road Family definitely did! Animals in the shelter were taken care of from the direct action of the students. We have great kids in the school, let’s show the rest of North Babylon just what we have!

How can I get information on registering my daughter for kindergarden? She will be entering Woods Road in the fall. Is there a pre-K program at Woods Road? Thanks to anyone who can help!
November 1, 2006 at 1:52 pm
Hi Kris, Registration is usually around January/February. There are notices in
The South Bay Newspaper reminding parents to register and you can check back here closer to those months for the exact day. You need the usual papers: vaccinations updated, proof of residency, birth certificate, etc. I don’t know about a pre-K program but the PTA does have a great orientation program for children who will be starting in the fall. You can sign up at registration. It’s a great experience for the children to become familiar with the school. They do an activity, take a tour of the school, go for a ride on the school bus, and have a really nice graduation ceremony. When they start school, they see familiar faces and it makes the transition easier for them. Hope this was helpful!

in the computer lab the fith graders get to do a stock market game thing. it is kind of hard to think of a company.in my team we are in 45 out of 111. it gets harder and harder each week.you got to make sur that you dont spend to much money. if you do that is not good.for one company make sure the price is lower then $100. that would make you near last place. good luck to the fith graders with the stock market game this year.

Dear Mr. Golub, will they ever allow homemade food back into the school? such as cupcakes, cookies, etc, that parents actually COOKED for their childrens birthdays or parties? I attended 4th grade traditions festival yesterday. the kids had hot chocolate (which is nice) and received 3 “holiday” cookies from the 99cents store each. wouldnt it have been nicer, if not even healthier, for the kids to have had home made cookies without all the trans fats and artifical ingredients of the 99 cent store ones? most of the parents commented on this issue. i understand the food allergy situation and would hope that at this age, the children who are allergic would know better and ask if the foods contain any nuts or whatever they are allergic to. younger grade children i would be more careful about. transfats are the most unhealthy things for kids to be eating. i guess you cant win either way, but the kids would be happier with real home made snacks again. hope i’m not bending your ear, just thought i would blog this opinion to you. thanks for listening. merry christmas, happy new year!
December 21, 2006 at 1:55 pm
Regarding the “Wellness Policy”: The state has only set forth guidelines for school districts to create a wellness policy. Nothing is set in stone. Does our district have a wellness committe and, if so, can I join? Who is making up the policies? One policy in particular, I find ridiculous. It is the one regarding only allowing packaged baked goods in school as long as it has an ingredients label. I guess that’s why my daughter brought home in her lunchbox yesterday a half-eaten Hostess cupcake. The district thinks that processed food containing trans fat, artificial flavor and preservatives is healthier for our children than a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies baked by a mom to bring in for a class party? It should not be the school district’s job to monitor students’ eating habits. Poor eating habits are the parents’ fault. The problem these days is that nobody is willing to take responsibility for their own actions. It is ashame that our children can’t enjoy holiday parties like the ones we had when we were kids.
December 21, 2006 at 8:13 pm
Mr. Golub — Emily asked me to write to you about the call from you earlier this evening. She enjoyed hearing a message from you.
December 22, 2006 at 11:53 am
Dear Lori Puma, I agree 100% with what you are saying. Shouldn’t each schools decision regarding these snacks come from the Principal? It was okay to serve cookies from the 99 cent store, but a home made batch of cookies is against the rules! Who are they kidding? Its the parents job at HOME to make sure their children are eating healthy, not the school to police their eating habits. once again, the responsiblities of parenting have been passed along to someone else!
December 22, 2006 at 11:55 am
PS MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!
December 22, 2006 at 2:16 pm
Hello parents,
I do agree that parents should teach their children to eat healthy foods and it is just another piece of society that has been pushed into the laps of schools. There is a district committee that was recently reconvened to include parents. As principals, we are just following the policy – not making it. If you want to be a part of the committee, please call the school lunch director, Kathy Cassidy at 321-3224.
Have a great holiday and happy new year!!
January 1, 2007 at 9:58 pm
Hi everyone, I just wanted to say thank you to Wendy for the comment about the Beam. I really enjoyed doing it and I look forward to getting started on the February issue. If you have any items you would like included, please send it in to school with your child in an envelope marked “BEAM” I’ll do my best to include it. Thank you to everyone for the great support
Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all! Laura
January 10, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Mr. Golub
I just wanted to know why the lunch times were increased. It seems to me and many other parents that if you give a child more time to eat they will take that amount of time and the child who is done now has to wait to go out. I would much rather that extra time be spent in the classroom learning rather than sitting around and possibly getting in trouble. I hope that lunch goes back to the way it was if not this year than hopefully next year. Even my children would rather be in class learning. Most kids feel that there is never enough time for recess, even if they got to play for the whole lunch time. Please reconsider the time that the children have for lunch.Thank you for looking after our children while they are in school.
January 10, 2007 at 4:21 pm
hello, another mom,
The lunch time was increased by ten minutes to accomodate the children. It had nothing to do with having enough time to eat as much as it had to do with feeding all of the students who get school lunch. By the time the last group of children would get through the lunch line, they would only have a few minutes to eat – we felt that wasn’t healthy.
By the way, who am I talking to?
Mr. Golub

CHILDREN AND PARENTS PLEASE READ: I am writing in response to the sad and appalling events that have taken place in our community over the last month. I am extremely saddened by the youth of today who feel they can harm and disrespect another individual. Where are our values? Where does their moral compass lie? As a society, as a community we can not sit idle and watch our children, the future of this planet, walk a path of physical and emotional destruction. WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS. We all have a soul. We all have hearts. Let’s use them. Instead of being destructive let’s be PRODUCTIVE. Instead of being harmful, be HELPFUL and RESOURCEFUL. Life can be so beautiful…if we let it. And this is easy to do.
Mr. Golub has been teaching character education in this school for as long as my children have been attending. I applaud him for it. He is addressing an important issue to our children and is thereby helping us to help them become productive, helpful, resourceful and loving. Now as parents and as students, we need to continue this at home. We need to make sure our children respect their family, strangers, friends, all those around them and most importantly respect themselves. That is part of our job as a parent. CHILDREN I TELL YOU THIS: Love yourself. Respect yourself. Respect all those around you. Life is beautiful…if you let it. Words can hurt, but, remember who you are…a wonderful person. And no matter what bad thing anyone says to you…you are still that same wonderful person. Turn the other cheek and walk away. Talk to an adult. Don’t let a bully turn your beautiful world into an ugly one. On a selfish note I end with this… I want my childrens world to be beautiful ALWAYS. I am sure all parents do. But it starts at home. And my childs world isn’t just at home…it is the WHOLE world. And in order for my childrens world to be beautiful ALWAYS…ALL children need to make their worlds beautiful too. IT TAKES A COMMUNITY TO RAISE A CHILD. Let’s learn from the violence that is afflicting our youth in this community. Let’s correct it now and forever. Let’s heal as a community and move forward…hopefully into a more BEAUTIFUL WORLD.

I love this blog. Even though I am up at school often, there is still a lot that I miss. This is a great way to keep in touch. Thanks for creating it!

In response to Donna’s comments, I am sure I speak for many parents when I say what happened is DISGUSTING! These kids were only 13 and 14 years old, how DARE they beat each other up like that and then have the nerve to VIDEO tape the event? This problem goes deeper that it seems, it has to do with their upbringing. Where were the PARENTS of these kids? How can you not know whats going on with your teenager and their life????? I, for one, am involved in EVERY aspect of my children’s life, maybe alittle too much involved, but I need to know that they are safe and are doing the right thing at all times. I would not tolerate ANYONE hitting my children or bullying them. They are not being brought up that way. I teach them to RESPECT everyone around them. The parents didnt see the kid taking the video camera outside? Ask what were they going to do with it? Who they were going to be hanging out with that day? Whats with these people???? These kids need direction and its apparent they are not getting it at home. What a sad and embarrassing situation this is, but it could have been much worse, someone could have been seriously hurt or even killed because of bullying. Lets all try to keep an extra eye out on our children and even ask them whats going on in school and in their lives. It might make a small difference. Its worth a try.

Thank you, Mr. Golub, for working so hard to help our children develop good character! They certainly need to know how to stand up for what is good and true as they go out into the world today! Woods Road is a wonderful place where children are learning to be kind, caring individuals! Thank you for finding a way to balance character education and the never ending struggle to improve state test scores. You rock!

I have a suggestion for a 5th grade fundraiser. Since webkinz are so popular among kids, what would you think about raffling some off for $1.00 or $ 00.50 each?

I have another idea for 5th grade fundraising. It is to sell T-shirts that are to the theme of kindness. You can also ask kids to make a design for the T-shirts and whoever has the best idea will get it on the T-shirts. You might even suggest putting the yearbook design on it, by me Kayla Benson. If people buy a T-shirt they can get their yearbook and T-shirt sighned. It probably would sell good because alot of people like to get their T-shirts signed, example like on D.A.R.E. graduation everyone was asking to get their T-shirts signed and it was a blast. Hope you like my idea and reallly think about it.

Kayla,
I like your ideas. Stop down in the office and we can discuss them. We are already doing the T shirt idea with kindness, but new ideas are always good.
